Six to be inducted into Harmon Sports Hall of Fame

Harmon High School will hold its sixth annual Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Friday, Feb. 27, during halftime of the boys’ varsity basketball game. The ceremony is anticipated to begin around 7:30 p.m.

Three former athletes, one coach, and two long-time supporters of athletics at Harmon will be recognized and honored. The inductees were chosen based on their athletics at Harmon, their character, academics and citizenship.

Chosen to represent the athletes:

• Brett Starr – Class of 2004
Basketball, football, track and field
2nd in 100 at KU Relays 2004
200 League Champ with School Record 2004
State Champion in the 400, 2004 (3rd fastest time in the state of Kansas)

• Byron Walker – Class of 2003.
Track and field, football, basketball
2002 Boys’ Track and Field runner of the year
2003 All Kansan Football Team (special teams)

• Dimita (Jones) Smith – Class of 1983
Basketball, Track and Field, Cross Country
6A State Champion 800 meters 1983
Led league in basketball points and rebounds 1983
All State in Cross Country

Chosen for the coach’s or athletic director’s award:

• Coach Jo Wachter, volleyball coach from 1985-2002 (head coach from 1998 to 2002). 1998 Kansas Coach of the Year. 2000 Galyan’s Women’s Intersport Network Coach of the Year. Basketball Coach 1989-2006 (head coach from 1999 to 2006). Track and Field Coach from 1990 to present (head girls’ coach from 2008 to present).

Chosen for the Distinguished Service award:
• Fred and Jackie Brant (Harmon Class of 1978 and 1979). They have been strong supporters of Harmon athletics, especially during the years 1994 to 2005. They have three children who are graduates. Both were active members of the Harmon Booster club, Fred serving as president and Jackie serving as vice president.
