The right lane of southbound K-5 from I-635 to 18th Street was closed to all traffic beginning at 2:30 p.m. today, June 18, and will remain closed until emergency pavement repair work can be completed for a small sinkhole.

Repair work should be completed in early July, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

All adjacent ramps will remain open, according to KDOT.

KDOT maintenance crews discovered a small sinkhole on the shoulder pavement which has begun to slightly undermine the pavement on the right lane of southbound K-5, a KDOT spokesman said.

The K-5 right lane has been closed for safety of the travelling public until all emergency repair work can be completed, the spokesman said.

Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signage and cones. Drivers should expect some delays during peak commute times and may wish to allow extra time for their daily commutes.

Updated daily traffic information for this repair project and for the entire Kansas City metro area can be viewed online at www.ksdot.org/kcmetro/laneclose.asp.

The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and slow down when approaching and driving through the project work zone.
