A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 11 p.m. for Wyandotte County and surrounding counties, according to the National Weather Service.
A weather radar map at 4:30 p.m. showed storms near Ottawa, near Lawrence, south of Topeka and in southeast Kansas.
Afternoon and evening storms could be strong to severe, according to the weather service. Those who are outdoors at large venues, who are camping, traveling or boating, should have an emergency plan, according to the weather service.
Persons outdoors should know where nearby shelters are; campers should react to the watch and not wait for warnings, according to the weather service. Travelers should take note of their location and stay in touch with weather reports. Boaters should head in if they see lightning or hear thunder, according to the weather service.
