School board plans to discuss $2 million contribution to Healthy Campus project

The Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education plans a discussion about making a $2 million contribution to the Healthy Communities Campus initiative at a special meeting at noon Tuesday, Jan. 6.

The meeting will be in the board room on the third floor of the Central Office and Training Center, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kan.

According to agenda documents, the board has been discussing the Healthy Communities Campus initiative to be developed near 10th and State Avenue. The plan includes a community center, grocery store, community gardens, green spaces and restoration of Big 11 Lake, according to agenda documents.

The school board’s agenda stated that the mayor’s request is $2 million from the school district. The board also may discuss the amount of funding for school district programs that may be held at the community center.

The new community center will contain a swimming and athletic facilities that are competition-level that the school district would have full access to as an investor, according to the agenda.

Potential programs are under discussion including teaching all second-graders how to swim; using competition pools for district swim teams; and other district-sponsored athletic activities, the agenda stated.

The meeting is open to the public.
