Democrats to meet Saturday
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will meet this Saturday, April 16, at The Dotte Spot Bar and Grill, 8123 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. The speakers will be State Sen. Pat Pettey, D-6th Dist., and Abbie Hodgson, chief of staff for the Kansas House of Representatives Democratic Caucus. The breakfast buffet will be available at 8:15 a.m. and the program will begin at 9:15 a.m. All Democrats are invited to attend The cost of the breakfast is $10, or $6 for students and those on limited incomes. Those attending are not required to purchase a breakfast. Reservations are requested by Thursday, April 14, to [email protected]. Reservations are very important in planning for the breakfast, but are not required to attend, according to the event’s organizers.

Red Cross blood drive to be Saturday
An American Red Cross blood drive is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at the Bonner Springs Church of the Nazarene, 724 Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. For more information or to make an appointment, visit www.redcrossblood.org.

Legislative coffee scheduled
A legislative coffee is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 16, at the West Wyandotte Branch Library, 1737 N. 82nd, Kansas City, Kan. It is sponsored by the library, League of Women Voters and NAACP.

WyCo Ethnic Festival to be April 16
The 11th annual WyCo Ethnic Festival will be Saturday, April 16, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Field House, 7250 State Ave. Hours of the public event are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 16. There is no admission charge, and parking is free. The event will feature many booths and tables with information about different cultures and countries. A variety of ethnic foods will be available for purchase. An entertainment stage will feature a different group every 30 minutes, including dancers, music performances and singers. KCKCC to honor the late Mike Haen before baseball game Saturday

Kansas City Kansas Community College will honor the late Mike Haen prior to the Blue Devils’ home doubleheader Saturday. Prior to Saturday’s home twin bill with Allen County, the family of Mike Haen will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at 12:45 p.m. Named head KCKCC baseball coach in 1978, Haen was accidentally shot and killed while serving as a reserve police officer. The KCKCC baseball field is at 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan.

Estate planning seminar to be April 16
Evans and Mullinix, in collaboration with Bishop Ward High School, will hold a free estate planning informational workshop on April 16. The educational program will feature experts who will provide legal advice and answer questions about estate planning. The event will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon April 16. WyCo African-American Democrat Caucus to meet Saturday
The WyCoAADC will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at the Visionary Impact Theater at 1017 N. 6th St. (old YWCA building), Kansas City, Kan. The agenda includes the first of a series of precinct committee person training, election updates, the state national delegate election to the national convention, and meeting candidates for the upcoming primary election to be held August 2016. Sister Souljah to appear in KCK April 16
Kansas City, Kan., Public Library will sponsor bestselling author Sister Souljah as part of the tour for her latest book, “A Moment of Silence: Midnight III.” The event is now sold out, according to the library website. The event will take place April 16 at Wyandotte High School. Sister Souljah will discuss her books, writing process, and inspiration. There will be a book signing following the discussion. Activist, educator, hip hop artist, and bestselling author Sister Souljah is best known for her autobiography, “No Disrespect,” and her novel, “The Coldest Winter Ever.” As a community activist, she participated in the anti-apartheid movement, organized rallies against racially motivated crimes, created the African Youth Survival Camp, and worked as the executive director of Daddy’s House Social Programs. She is a graduate of Rutgers University and was also educated at Cornell University and University of Salamanca. More information about the event can be found at www.kckpl.org. FC Kansas City kicks off season with match Saturday in KCK
FC Kansas City, a professional women’s soccer club, will play its regular season opener at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan. The Western New York Flash will be the opponents. The FC Kansas City Blues, two-time defending National Women’s Soccer League champions, will start the regular season with 19 players.
