Harlem Book Fair coming to KCK today
Two community advocacy organizations are joining to bring the Harlem Book Fair to Kansas City, Kan., today to promote literacy and cross-cultural dialogue. The Kansas City, Kan., NAACP and El Centro, which are African-American and Hispanic community advocacy organizations, the Harlem Book Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Reardon Civic Center, 5th and Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. The day-long event will feature nationally acclaimed writers and community-based Kansas City authors and artists in author readings, music, children’s storytelling, and art presentations. Westheight neighborhood to hold centennial celebration today
The Historic Westheight Neighborhood Association will hold a centennial celebration for the neighborhood from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in a park area near 22nd Street and Washington Boulevard, Kansas City, Kan. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1300 N. 18th St., at the entrance of Westheight, will hold an open house from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Great Midwest Balloon Fest today at Bonner Springs
The Great Midwest Balloon Fest continues from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, 126th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs. The family-friendly event also will include tethered rides scheduled from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, and 7:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Balloon Fest also has a children’s area and a beer garden with live music. A festival area includes a carnival during festival hours Friday and Saturday, as well as from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Hay rides, train rides, kite flying, arts and crafts, bounce houses, a Halloween costume contest, and a pie eating contest also are planned. Ballpark to be site of Beerfest Saturday
CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan., will be the site of the second annual Beerfest at the Ballpark from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. The benefit event will be presented by Baron Contracting. Adults 21 and older who attend may sample more than 150 craft beers. There will be a disc jockey and music at the event. Halloween bat box craft program planned
Make a Halloween bat box at a craft program from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library youth services storytime-craft room, 635 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Trunk or Treat to be today
A Trunk or Treat will be held today at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds, 1300 Polfer Road, Kansas City, Kan. Admission is $5 per child 2 years old and older. Hay rides, games, a haunted petting zoo and hot dogs around a fire pit are planned.
Turner Community Library to be part of Halloween event today
The Turner Recreation Center will hold a Spooktacular event from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. The library at 831 S. 55th will participate. There will be games, costumes and a haunted house. The library will have games. Most of the recreation center’s games will cost 50 cents each; events and games in the library will be free. Strawberry Hill Museum open on weekends
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., is open on the weekends. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
