U.S. attorney to speak at prayer service for Charleston victims Saturday in KCK
U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom will speak during a prayer service Saturday in Kansas City, Kan., for the victims of the shooting in Charleston, S.C. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims in Charleston,” Grissom said. “The Department of Justice has opened a hate crime investigation. We will use every tool to investigate this tragic event.” The service will be from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 417 Richmond Ave., in Kansas City, Kan. The Rev. C.L. Bachus will preside.
Democrats to meet Saturday for breakfast
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will meet Saturday, June 20, at a new location, Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave. State Sen. David Haley and State Rep. Kathy Wolfe Moore will be the speakers. Rep. Wolfe Moore is the Wyandotte County legislative delegation chair. The breakfast buffet will be available at 8:15 a.m. and the program will begin at 9:15. The cost for the breakfast is $10; or $7 for students and those on limited income. All Democrats are invited to attend. Reservations are requested by Friday, June 19. Reservations help plan for attendance, but are not necessary to attend. To RSVP, email [email protected]. Those who attend do not need to purchase a breakfast. The group will be meeting at Las Islas Marias in June and July. It is located at the former site of Casa de Alvarado, where the breakfast began 11 years ago.
Nature hike planned Saturday
A nature hike is planned from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 20, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Environmental Library at Wyandotte County Lake, 91st and Leavenworth Road. The group will hike along the bridle trail. Those participating are asked to dress for the weather.
Hopefest planned June 20

Zoo animals to visit library
Animals from the Kansas City Zoo are scheduled to visit the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20. Those attending can expect to see artifacts, learn about science, hear stories and see live animals.
KC Symphony Instrument Petting Zoo to visit library
The Kansas City Symphony’s Instrument Petting Zoo will visit the West Wyandotte Library, 1727 N. 82nd St., from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 20. Those attending will be able to see and hear different musical instruments. The event is free and open to the public, and children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Free concert offered June 20 at Legends
The “Live at the Legends” concert series will continue at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at The Legends Outlets, I-70 and I-435, Kansas City, Kan. Performing June 20 will be Dino O’Dell and The Doo Dads, children’s music. Future concert dates include June 27: The Zeros, new wave 1980s; July 11: Red Guitar, transcendent melodic rock music; and July 18: Perpetual Change, 1980s and 1990s rock (with some hits from the 2000s).
Alcott to be site for ‘Robin Hood Files’ children’s play
Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th, Kansas City, Kan., will be the site for “The Robin Hood Files,” a children’s production by Phil Tuffin directed by Katie Lee. This will be performed at 7 p.m. June 20, and at 3 p.m. June 21. Tickets to the production are $8 for general admission, and $6 for children ages 12 and younger and senior citizens. T-Bones play at home Saturday against Wichita
The T-Bones are host to Wichita at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at Village West in Kansas City, Kan. Saturday is Military Appreciation Night, with CPR training and postgame fireworks planned. It also is Boy Scout campout night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
