Wyandotte County Democratic Breakfast planned Jan. 17
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will meet Saturday, Jan. 17, in a new location, the cafeteria of Kansas City Kansas Community College, 7250 State Ave. The cafeteria is in the lower floor of the Jewell Building at KCKCC. The guest speakers at the meeting will be state Sen. Anthony Hensley, Democratic leader of the Kansas Senate, and state Rep. Tom Burroughs, newly installed Democratic leader of the Kansas House. The breakfast buffet is available at 8:15 a.m. and the forum begins at 9:15 a.m. The cost for the buffet is $10; the cost is $7 for students and those on limited incomes. The meeting is open to all Democrats. Reservations are requested by Jan. 16 to [email protected]. While reservations are requested, they are not required to attend.
KCK school board president to speak at King Day event
Evelyn Hill, president of the Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education, will be the guest speaker at the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday celebration sponsored by the Johnson County NAACP and the Johnson County King Day Celebration. The program theme is “Though Sometimes Disillusioned, the Dream Persists.” The program begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Blue Valley West High School, 16200 Antioch Road, Stilwell, Kan. Displays open at 1 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, with donations accepted.
Fundraiser planned Jan. 17
Resurrection Catholic School, 425 N. 15th, Kansas City, Kan., plans a fundraiser, “A Taste of KCK,” on Saturday, Jan. 17. The guest speaker will be Lamar Hunt Jr. A social time at 6 p.m. is followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and a program at 8 p.m. The cost is $35 per person. Project Feederwatch continues
Project Feederwatch continues at the Schlagle Environmental Library at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road. The bird count is planned each Saturday when people sign up in advance. For more information, call 913-299-2384.
Strawberry Hill Museum open for holidays
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., has opened for the holidays and will remain open on weekends through Sunday, Jan. 26. The museum, decorated in Victorian style, is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, with special tours available by appointment. Wyandotte County Museum features World War I exhibit
The Wyandotte County Historical Society and Museum, 635 N. 126th, Bonner Springs, Kan., will feature a historical exhibit about the local effect of World War I, “Local Poppies: Centennial of World War I.” The exhibit will include information Wyandotte County service members, war memorabilia, propaganda posters and local memorials from Wyandotte County. Book sale continues at Schlagle Environmental Library
Science and nature nonfiction and fiction books and DVDs will be on sale today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Schlagle Environmental Library at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road. Books will be 25 cents to $2. Coffee table books will be up to $5.
Sign up for health insurance on Saturday
Sign up for health insurance during a program from 1 to 5 p.m. Jan. 17 at the South Library, 3401 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The Community Health Council will help. Assistance in Burmese and Spanish will be available.
Another health insurance signup program will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 17 at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd, in the auditorium.
