Autumn Arts Fest planned Nov. 15
The Autumn Arts Fest is planned Nov. 15 at the Bonner Springs District Activity Center (YMCA), 410 N. Bluegrass Drive, Bonner Springs. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 15. It is sponsored by the Bonner Springs Arts Alliance. The public is invited to shop for holiday gifts, arts and crafts. Local organizations to assist in open enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace
Organizations in the Greater Kansas City area, including the Rosedale Development Association and Enroll Wyandotte, will hold special events on Saturday, Nov. 15, to kick off the first day of open enrollment this year in the federal Health Insurance Marketplace. The organizations will hold public education events, open houses and free health fairs to inform uninsured and underinsured residents about coverage options available for 2015. Federal navigators and certified application counselors will staff the events to answer questions about health insurance, set up appointments and provide application assistance to individuals seeking to enroll in the marketplace. Created by the Affordable Care Act, the Health Insurance Marketplace is a federally operated insurance marketplace online at www.healthcare.gov. The open enrollment period for 2015 coverage begins Nov. 15 and ends Feb. 15. In order for coverage to be effective Jan. 1, persons must enroll by Dec. 15. Free kidney screening, flu vaccines offered Nov. 15
A free kidney screening and flu vaccines will be offered at a health fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the 8th Street YMCA, 900 N. 8th St., Kansas City, Kan. The National Kidney Foundation is sponsoring this screening for those who may be at risk for kidney disease. This includes those who have diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of kidney failure or over the age of 60. There also will be flu shots, weight and body mass index readings. The flu shots will be through Walgreens. The Y will have 50 flu shot vouchers available for those who qualify. Those who do not have insurance will not qualify for a free vaccination; flu shots will be available at the event using their insurance card. Lapel pin collection to be part of presentation Nov. 15
Clinton Wynn is scheduled to make a presentation on life and his pin collection at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the South Branch Library, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Wynn has more than 6,000 lapel pins, one of the largest collections in the Midwest. Some of the pins will be on display at the library. Wynn also will give a presentation on “The Fundamentals of a Successful and Balanced Life.” The event also will include refreshments at noon. Mobile food pantry scheduled to be at 65th and State today
A mobile food pantry from Harvesters is scheduled to be at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave. The food truck is scheduled to be at the parking lot of the former Walmart store at 1 p.m. Nov. 15. Food will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis. The food items include fresh fruit and vegetables. There are no income restrictions; the food will be given away as supplies last. Quantities will vary according to the number of people in the family. Those receiving the food may line up in the KCKCC-TEC parking lot prior to the distribution. Future food distributions will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 13 and Dec. 20 at KCKCC-TEC. Sponsors are Harvesters and Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, and KCKCC is a partner in this effort. Democrats to meet Saturday
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast is scheduled to be Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Eisenhower Room at the Hilton Garden Inn, 520 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The speaker will be former state Rep. Bill Reardon. He was a member of the Kansas House of Representatives for 30 years. The breakfast buffet is available at 8:15 a.m. and the forum begins at 9:15. The cost for the breakfast buffet, which includes tax, service and tip, is $10; or $7 for students and those on limited income. All Democrats are invited to attend. The Raggedy Doll ministry craft program originally scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Open Door Baptist Church has been canceled because of the winter storm predicted for Saturday.
Bishop Ward play scheduled Nov. 15
Bishop Ward High School’s Drama Club is presenting “The Life and Times of Princess Sophia” by Douglas Clinton. Sponsored by drama teacher Kelly Lipovitz, this comedy opened Nov. 13 with a full crowd and lots of laughs. The show will continue at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Willard L. Phillips Memorial Auditorium at the school, 708 N. 18th, Kansas City, Kan.
Piper plans to present musical Saturday
The musical “Grease” is scheduled to be performed Saturday at Piper High School by the Piper High School theater department. Admission is $5 for students and $7 for adults. There is one performance left, on Saturday, as other performances were held Wednesday through Friday. The performance is scheduled at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15.
