Former Congresswoman to speak at Democratic breakfast Saturday
Former Congresswoman Nancy Boyda, who represented the 2nd District, U.S. House, from 2007 through 2009, will be the guest speaker Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast. The breakfast buffet will begin at 8:15 a.m. followed by the program at 9 a.m. at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Boyda currently is running for the U.S. Senate in Kansas. Also speaking on Saturday will be Ben Meers, Kansas Democratic Party executive director. The breakfast is open to Democrats. The cost of the breakfast will be $10, or $6 for students and those on limited incomes. It is not required to purchase a breakfast to attend the meeting. Those who are planning on purchasing a breakfast are asked to make reservations by Friday, Aug. 16, to Scott Mackey at [email protected], but reservations are not required although they are encouraged. On Aug. 16, there will be a sponsor that will pay the cost of students attending breakfast for the first time.
Learn about snakes at library program
A storytime about snakes, with crafts, will be the program at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library, 4051 West Drive, Wyandotte County Lake Park, Kansas City, Kansas. There will be a real snake at the program. This program is for children.
Spanish singing lessons planned

Croatian Festival to be Saturday on Strawberry Hill
The century-old St. John the Baptist Croatian Festival is set for Saturday, Aug. 17, on historic Strawberry Hill. Activities will begin at 5 p.m. on the parish grounds, 708 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Admission is free. Traditional Croatian food including sarma (cabbage rolls) and sausage sandwiches, cibanac (Croatian stew) and palacinke (crepes) will be served along with traditional summer fare, hamburgers, hot dogs, soft drinks and beer. The kids’ area will have games and prizes. Other booths will include povitica, apple strudel, surprise packages or salami. The Strawberry Hill Boutique will have T-shirts and aprons designed by Kansas City artist Michael Savage of Sav-Art. There will also be strawberry-themed jewelry and magnets. Hrvatski Obicaj will play Croatian music, and as the festival winds down, there will be a free dance with music by Kolograd on the Strawberry Hill Museum grounds. A pivotal three-game homestand for Sporting Kansas City (7-11-7, 28 points) begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when the San Jose Earthquakes (11-8-5, 38 points) visit Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas.
