Democrats scheduled to meet Saturday
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast is scheduled to meet on Saturday morning, Feb. 16, at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The speakers will be Unified Government Mayor and CEO David Alvey and State Rep. Pam Curtis, D-32nd Dist., chair of the Wyandotte County legislative delegation. A breakfast buffet will be available at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, with the forum at 9 a.m. The cost of the breakfast is $10, or $6 for students and those on limited incomes. Those attending do not have to purchase a breakfast. The event is open to Democrats, and reservations for those planning to attend are requested to [email protected].
Black History Banquet scheduled Feb. 16
The 27th annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet will be Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Jack Reardon Convention Center, 500 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The host of the event is the Unified Government Black History Committee. The social hour will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the banquet at 6 p.m. The keynote speaker this year is Tyrone Flowers, a native of Kansas City, Missouri, who is the founder of Higher M-Pact, a community-based organization dedicating to transforming youth into leaders. Flowers faced many challenges growing up during his childhood, but his determination and faith brought him through the adversities in life to fulfilling his God given-purpose. He will address this year’s theme, “21st Century Expressions: Dreams, Struggles and Wisdom.” In addition to the keynote speaker, this year the achievements of two successful business owners and a professional who is making a difference in the community will be highlighted. Despite the challenges of access to capital, business resources and discriminatory practices, minority entrepreneurs have overcome challenges to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. The main highlight and purpose of the event is the recognition of local colleges and check presentation in support of promising students who have a desire to pursue a post-secondary education. Dance planned Saturday evening
A Valentine Dance will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at St. Mary-St. Anthony parish basement, 615 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Tickets will be $20 for adults, with children under 5 free. The dance and meal are sponsored by the German American Edelweiss Society.
