Democrats to meet Saturday
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will meet Saturday, Sept. 15, at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The event begins with a buffet at 8:15 a.m., followed by the program at 9 a.m. Guest speakers for the program include State Sen. Lynn Rogers, Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor; and Nathaniel McLaughlin, Democratic candidate for Kansas insurance commissioner. The program is open to Democrats. The cost of the buffet is $10, or $6 for students and those on limited incomes. Reservations are requested by Friday, Sept. 14, to [email protected]. Reservations are not required. Those attending are not required to purchase a breakfast. Any special needs that are required should be included in the reservation email.

Library in the Park to be Sept. 15
The fourth annual Library in the Park will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Big Eleven Lake, 11th and State Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas. The free outdoor festival will include live music, food and activities. Derrick Barnes, author of “CROWN: An Ode to the Fresh Cut,” will sign free copies of his children’s book at the event. Local music groups The Sextet, Ayel, and The Urban Bucket Brigade will perform. A taco competition will be held with local KCK taquerias Ninfa’s, Carniceria la Luz, Indios Carbonsitos, and Don Antonio’s. Those attending may sample the free tacos. Renaissance Festival continues
The Kansas City Renaissance Festival continues on weekends through Oct. 14 at the festival grounds at 130th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs. The festival is a celebration of medieval life, with such activities as jousting, contests, a royal parade, music, entertainment and food. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $22.95 per adult, $13.95 for children 5-12, $20.25 for seniors and students, and free for children 4 and younger. Hispanic Heritage Month program planned
The Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton, is sponsoring a Hispanic Heritage Month program. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Bonner Springs Farmers’ Market, 129 Elm St. There will be food, salsa dancing and a mariachi group. Admission is free.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony planned Saturday for new soccer fields in Turner area
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Highland Park Sports Complex, 4900 Shawnee Drive, Kansas City, Kansas. The soccer fields are the first part of a multi-use sports complex on 20.8 acres, according to a news release from the Turner Recreation Commission. The complex has three natural fields for co-ed soccer practices and games. The complex also includes a futsal court, concession stand, restroom facilities, paved parking areas, covered picnic shelter and walking trails. The event is open to the public.

Annual butterfly festival to be Saturday
The 13th annual Lawson Roberts Butterfly Festival is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library, at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road. The festival, at the library at 4051 West Drive, is a family program with educational activities. There will be face painting, a monarch tagging demonstration, crafts, a butterfly walk, a monarch migration game, scavenger hunts and photo contest results.

Mexican Independence Day celebration planned
A Mexican Independence Day celebration is planned from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the South Branch Library, Conference Room A-B, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The event is for all ages. For more library programs, visit www.kckpl.org.

‘Witty Fools and Foolish Wits’ at the Alcott Arts Center
The Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th St., plans its annual Shakespeare performance on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 15, and Sunday, Sept. 16. “Witty Fools and Foolish Wits” promises to be a humorous selection of scenes from plays by William Shakespeare. The play will be performed at 3 p.m. Sept. 15 and 16. The Alcott is not ADA-accessible. Tickets will be $10 to the play. Taco dinner fundraiser Saturday for Leavenworth Road Association
A taco dinner fundraiser is planned from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the FOP Hall, 7844 Leavenworth Road, Kansas City, Kansas. The taco dinner will be served buffet-style. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. The LRA will not have a parade this year, with the construction on Leavenworth Road, and the taco dinner is taking the place of its annual fundraiser. Local teams expected to participate in barbecue event this weekend
The American Royal World Series of Barbecue being held now through Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Kansas Speedway is expected to include some Wyandotte County participants. The event includes live musical entertainment, a car show and a tasting area. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Saturday will include a family fun fest. Tickets are $25 per person, with children’s tickets at $9. The Kansas Speedway is near the intersection of I-70 and I-435 in Wyandotte County. Church plans fiesta
Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2203 Parallel, Kansas City, Kansas, plans a Fiesta after the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, Sept. 15. The fiesta features Mexican food, music, dancing and games.

Church festival planned
The Cathedral of St. Peter, 416 N. 14th St., Kansas City, Kansas, plans a fall festival from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, in the parish hall. The event includes bingo, a silent auction and food. The Fairfax Four will entertain.

NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet to be Sept. 15
The Kansas City, Kansas, NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Reardon Convention Center, 5th and Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas. The KCK NAACP is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The guest speaker is Derrick Johnson, NAACP national president, on the topic of “Defeat Hate, Vote.” Tickets to the banquet will be $65. Will the T-Bones win the championship Saturday night?
Will the T-Bones win the American Association championship on Saturday night in Kansas City, Kansas? With a 2-1 lead in the championship series with St. Paul, the T-Bones could take the trophy at the game at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at T-Bones Stadium in KCK. It is a best of five series. Tickets are $8 each. At this game, War Horses for Veterans will honor five Vietnam veterans. Kansas City Comets soccer players Mark Saxby and Nacho Flores are scheduled to throw out the first pitch and sign autographs.
