Grinter Fest scheduled Sept. 8
Grinter Fest will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Grinter Place, 78th and K-32, Kansas City, Kansas. There will be an apple pie contest with the mayor, and an appearance by a Moses Grinter re-enactor. Educational displays and craft vendors also will be part of Grinter Fest. Admission to the Grinter Fest is free. VFW Post 846 will have barbecue foods for sale at the Grinter Barn. Members of the Delaware Tribe will perform a ceremonial dance and talk about the history of the Delawares. Paul Martveli will perform bluegrass and country music. Historical displays are planned. A bounce house, games and a magic show are planned for kids. About 50 vendors with booths are planned. While Grinter Fest is free, there will be a charge for Grinter House tours of $6 for adults and $3 for children. The event will be held rain or shine. Central Avenue parade and festival to be Sept. 8
The Central Avenue Dotteversity Parade will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at 18th and Central, and ends at the festival, which follows the parade at Bethany Park at 11th and Central. Six high school marching bands will be in the parade. The bands will meet together to perform at Bethany Park. The parade and festival afterward at Bethany Park will be held rain or shine. Renaissance Festival continues
The Kansas City Renaissance Festival continues on weekends through Oct. 14 at the festival grounds at 130th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs. The festival is a celebration of medieval life, with such activities as jousting, contests, a royal parade, music, entertainment and food. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $22.95 per adult, $13.95 for children 5-12, $20.25 for seniors and students, and free for children 4 and younger. Church plans Unity Fest on Saturday
The eighth annual Unity Fest, a fundraiser for Our Lady of Unity parish, Sacred Heart and St. John the Evangelist Catholic churches, will take place from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Sacred Heart field, 2646 S. 34th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The family event will include a kids area with carnival games, crafts and inflatables. All-day entertainment will include different musical groups, Mariachi groups and Folkloric dance groups. Traditional American and Mexican-style food will be available. Also available will be barbecue and drinks. A silent auction will be held in the church hall, and a mini-soccer tournament is planned for all age groups.

Used book sale planned at Turner library
The Turner Community Library, 831 S. 55th St., plans a used book sale from 10:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. Hardback books will be for sale for two for $1, or a bag for $5, paperbacks five for $1 or a bag for $2. Children’s books and audio-visual materials also will be in the sale. The sale also will be Monday, Sept. 10, at the Turner library.

Craft program planned at Main Library
Children and teens will create autumn trees in a craft program from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, in the craft room of the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. Those attending will use tissue paper and ModPodge to create their art. Alcott Arts Center plans Shakespeare play and sports art show
The Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th St., plans its annual Shakespeare performance on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 8. “Witty Fools and Foolish Wits” will be a humorous selection of scenes from plays by William Shakespeare. The play will be performed at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8 and 9, and also Sept. 15-16. Directed by Lindsay Weaver, the production is usually held outdoors in the Alcott’s parking lot and on the grounds, but this year, it has been moved inside to the Alcott theater because of the rain in the forecast. The play includes selected scenes from “Romeo and Juliet,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and other Shakespearean plays. Tickets will be $10 to the play. In conjunction with the play, the Alcott will have a sports art show on Saturday evening. Sports art by Darryl Wood, Anthony Oropeza and Corey Jones will be on display. Wood is a Wyandotte High School graduate, and Oropeza is a Harmon High School graduate. There are many Chiefs and Royals sports art pictures that will be on display. At 6 p.m. Saturday there will be a reception for the artists with a disc jockey and hors d’oeuvres. There is no admission charge for the art show. The Alcott is not yet ADA-accessible. Sporting KC takes on Orlando in KCK
Four points out of first place in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference, Sporting Kansas City (13-7-6, 45 points) returns home on Saturday to play host to Orlando City SC (7-16-3, 24 points) at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and tickets remain available via SeatGeek.com as Sporting KC continues its playoff push. FOX Sports Kansas City Plus and FOX Sports Midwest Plus will air three hours of live coverage on Saturday beginning at 7 p.m.
