Democratic candidates for Kansas secretary of state to speak at Saturday meeting
Democratic candidates for Kansas secretary of state will be the guest speakers at the Saturday morning, March 17, meeting of the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The event begins with a buffet at 8:15 a.m. followed by a program at 9 a.m. Secretary of state candidates who are expected to appear include Nathaniel McLaughlin, a Kansas City, Kansas, businessman; State Sen. Marci Francisco, D-Lawrence; and Brian McClendon, a professor at the University of Kansas. Also speaking at the meeting will be State Rep. Kathy Wolfe Moore, D-36th Dist., who will give a legislative update. The cost of the breakfast buffet is $10 or $6 for students and those on limited income. Reservations are requested by Friday, March 16, to [email protected]. Although reservations are encouraged, reservations are not necessary to attend. Those attending do not have to purchase a breakfast. The program is open to all Democrats.

Pancake breakfast fundraiser to be March 17
A pancake breakfast fundraiser benefiting the Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas, and Humane Society of Greater Kansas City will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at Trinity Community Church, 5010 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. Pancakes, sausage and eggs, juice and coffee will be available for $8 a person.

Library offers scientific illustration program March 17
The Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Environmental Library, 4051 West Drive, inside Wyandotte County Lake Park, Kansas City, Kansas, will offer a scientific illustration program from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 17. The program is for those who want to sketch nature. Participants will sketch from books or specimens on display around the library. There will be informal instruction. Sketch paper and drawing utensils will be available, or participants may bring their own. The free program is for ages 12 and older. KCK school board to meet Saturday
The Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Education will discuss the selection of a firm to conduct a nationwide search for a superintendent at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, in the third floor board room at the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools Central Office and Training Center, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kansas. It is a continuation of the board’s selection process. On Saturday, March 10, the board selected four search firms to come back for an interview with the board on March 17. Sporting KC to play San Jose Saturday in KCK
Sporting Kansas City will play the San Jose Earthquakes at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. The match will be aired live on Fox Sports KC, Fox Sports Midwest Plus, ESPN 94.5 and ESPN Deportes KC 1480 Am. The first 10,000 fans through the stadium gates will receive a free slap koozie. A limited-edition St. Patrick’s Day Scarf will be for sale at the SportingStyle locations at the stadium.
