Haley to speak at Democratic breakfast
State Sen. David Haley, D-4th Dist., will be the guest speaker at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast. The breakfast will be held at the Dotte Spot Bar and Grill, 8123 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas, beginning at 8:15 a.m., and the program begins at 9:15 a.m. Also making a presentation at the breakfast will be Duane Goossen from the Kansas Center for Economic Growth. The meeting is open to Democrats. Reservations are requested by Thursday, May 18, to [email protected]. Breakfast will cost $10, or $6 for students and those on limited incomes. There is a $2 charge for coffee for those not purchasing breakfast. Reservations are not required, but are requested.
Community block party, 5K run and health fair planned Saturday
A community block party, 5K run and health fair are planned Saturday, May 20, at the New Bethel Church, 745 Walker Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The event is held as part of a National Health Challenge whose purpose is to improve health in Wyandotte County. The Healthy Community Corridor, a partnership between the New Bethel Church Community Development Corp., the 20-20-20 Movement and the Wyandotte County Parks and Recreation Department, received a $10,000 grant to help launch a program. The 4th annual event will begin with a 5K color run, followed by a community health fair and a community block party. In addition to building on existing initiatives to create a Safe Routes to Parks program, the event places a focus on bringing awareness to mental health in the community as part of National Mental Health Month. The 5K event begins at 8 a.m., and participants may walk, run or bike to bring awareness to mental health. Check-in time is 7 a.m. A community health fair follows from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with free testing and resources for blood pressure, diabetes, biometrics and prostate cancer. Clinical breast exams will be offered, along with physicals for school-aged children. A community block party will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will include NFL Play 60 with Kansas City Chiefs cheerleaders and KC Wolf, healthy food trucks, bike giveaways, inflatables, carnival games, Zumba and live music. There is a $10 donation to participate in the 5K, with children 12 and younger free. The health fair and community block party are free and open to the public.
Farmers Market planned Saturday
The Bonner Springs Farmers Market will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 20, at Kelly Murphy Park, 129 Elm St., Bonner Springs.
Quindaro oral history day to be Saturday at library
A Quindaro oral history day will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 20 at the Main Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area and the library will collect oral histories from Quindaro. The public is invited to record their memories.
Learn to quilt at library program
Participants in a library program on May 20 will learn the basics of making their own quilts, learn new skills or work on skills they already have. The quilt program is from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 20 at the West Wyandotte Library, Conference Room C, 1737 N. 82nd St. The class size is limited. The class is for ages 11 and older. Advance registration is requested.
T-Bones to play at CommunityAmerica ballpark
The T-Bones will continue the 2017 opening series against Lincoln Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at home. Post-game fireworks are planned, and there will be special military pricing on tickets.
