Salvation Army, YMCAs, UG, libraries open cooling shelters

The Salvation Army in the Kansas City area has announced its community centers are open as cooling shelters from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17.

The area is under an excessive heat warning from 1 p.m. today through Saturday evening.

It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The YMCAs in Greater Kansas City also will be open to the community from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, according to an announcement on the YMCA website. Anyone may come into the YMCA facilities during these hours. ( https://kansascityymca.org/ )

Guests should bring a photo ID and check in at the Welcome Center when they arrive, according to the website. Children 15 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older. Teens 16 and older may visit unaccompanied by an adult.

The YMCAs are open as cooling centers only when there is an Excessive Heat Warning from the National Weather Service.

The Providence-Ball Family Center YMCA is located at 86th and Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas. It will be open as a cooling center from 1 to 4 p.m. on days when there is an Excessive Heat Warning.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Libraries also are open to the public today through the evening. Those who go to the library are asked to participate in a library activity, such as reading. Sleeping is not allowed in the library.

The Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., is open until 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Also open to the public is the South Branch Library, 3104 Strong, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd, is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library, 4501 West Drive, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the third Saturday of each month, and closed Sundays. The Turner Community Library, 831 S. 55th, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and closed on Sunday. The Unified Government has a number of recreation centers and buildings open to the public for cooling centers.

They include the Armourdale Community Center, 730 Osage, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; Eisenhower Community Center, 2901 N.72nd St., 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; Joe E. Amayo Argentine Community Center, 2810 Metropolitan Ave., 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; Beatrice Lee Community Center, 1310 N. 10th St., 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; Kane Community Center, 3130 N. 122nd St., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and closed Saturday and Sunday; as well as KCK City Hall lobby, 701 N. 7th St., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; Willa Gill Center, 645 Nebraska, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and holidays.

The Turner Recreation Commission center, 831 S. 55th, will be open from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and closed on Sunday.

In Bonner Springs, facilities that are open as cooling centers include: Bonner Springs Library, 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday; Bonner Springs Community Center, 200 E. 3rd St., Bonner Springs, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, seniors only at this time, age 55 and older; Bonner Springs Family YMCA, 2251 S. 138th St., Bonner Springs, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. only on days the National Weather Service issues an Excessive Heat Warning.

Also, the Bonner Springs Aquatic Park at 1200 S. 134th St., Bonner Springs, will be open during swim hours, noon to 7 p.m. Sunday through Saturday. A fee is required for this pool.

Parkwood Pool, 950 Quindaro Blvd., will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, and 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. A fee is required unless the temperature is 100 degrees or higher.

Free spray parks are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily until Labor Day. THey include Eisenhower Spray Park, 2901 N. 72nd St, behind Eisenhower Middle School; Heathwood Park, North 10th and Parallel Parkway; and Pierson Spray Park, 1800 S. 55th St.
