Rosedale volunteers to participate in MLK reading event

The Rosedale Development Association is participating in the 2019 Reading Inspirational Stories to Empower program.

The program celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day by having community volunteers go into classrooms to read stories about civil rights and social justice. MLK Day is used as a starting point for volunteers to engage with children about the nation’s ongoing struggle toward equality.

Every January since 2013, Rosedale Development Association has been the host of the RISE program.

Interested volunteers must participate in an orientation to discuss these stories and their significance with Rosedale youth.

The orientation at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, will be held in the Rainbow Mennonite Church Fellowship Hall, 1444 Southwest Blvd., Kansas City, Kansas. There will be a complimentary dinner.

The orientation will help volunteers emphasize the importance of reading and communication through the stories’ themes. Also, volunteers will engage in activities that help them reflect on inequality in and around their own lives.
