Residential fire, explosion causes $250,000 damage

A residential fire and natural gas explosion at 2017 S. Mill at 11:43 April 26 caused about $250,000 damage, according to the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department spokesman.

The cause of the fire at the unoccupied multi-family residence is undetermined and under investigation, the spokesman stated. The incident was believed to have involved a natural gas explosion, according to the Fire Department spokesman.

There were no injuries in the fire, the spokesman stated. The residence was unoccupied.

Fire crews had arrived at the residence within 4 minutes of the call. They reported heavy damage and structure compromising the north side of the structure, the spokesman said. Debris from the north side of the building had fallen in the parking lot.

A natural gas odor was detected and gas service was shut down, the spokesman said. After a search it was determined no one was in the building.

About $250,000 in damage was sustained to the $500,000 building, according to the spokesman.
