A repair and resurfacing project began on the northbound and southbound I-35 bridges over Southwest Boulevard and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad in Kansas City, Kan.
Work is taking place mostly during daylight hours Monday through Friday. Project work includes structural steel modifications, expansion joint repairs, and bridge rail repairs on both bridges, as well as deck and approach pavement repairs followed by a polymer overlay on the southbound I-35 bridge deck.
Beginning this morning, the eastbound and westbound Southwest Boulevard under the I-35 bridges will be shifted left and right so that crews can begin structural steel repair work under the bridges.
The Southwest Boulevard to southbound I-35 entrance ramp may also be closed or experience lane shifts later in the project. In late July or early August, work on I-35 mainline lanes will begin. Both directions of I-35 may be reduced to two lanes throughout the weekend (from 7 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday) and may be reduced to one lane during overnight hours (between 7 p.m. in the evening to 5 a.m. the following morning) on Sunday through Saturday.
Project work on the northbound I-35 lane over the bridges is limited to expansion joint and bridge rail repairs. The majority of the traffic impacts will be on the southbound I-35 lanes as the pavement will be patched followed by a polymer overlay. This work is expected to be completed by early November 2015.
Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signage and cones. Advance message boards will alert drivers to the lane and ramp closures. Drivers should expect major delays during the peak hours and should allow extra time for their daily commutes.
Advance separate notification will be sent out in advance of any major traffic impacts. Updated daily traffic information for this project and for the entire Kansas City metro area can be viewed online at: www.ksdot.org/kcmetro/laneclose.asp.
The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and slow down when approaching and driving through the project work zone.
Clarkson Construction, Kansas City, Mo.,is the primary contractor on this $1.579 million bridge repair and resurfacing project. The overall project is scheduled to be completed in early December 2015, weather permitting.
