Rain, storms in forecast

Showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast through the end of the work week, with the best chances Friday through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Periods of heavy rainfall are possible with storms over the weekend and will lead to increased flooding, flash flooding and river flooding concerns, the weather service said.

There is a slight risk for excessive rainfall Saturday into Sunday, according to the weather service. The Kansas City, Kansas, forecast calls for 1 to 2 inches of rain Saturday night.

Heavy rain across the northern plains and upstream releases will place many points along the Missouri River back into flood, the weather service said.

Currently, the Missouri River at Parkville, which includes the Wyandotte County area, is below flood stage and below action stage, and is projected to rise into the action stage on Monday, according to hydrology charts. The Kansas River at 23rd Street is currently below flood stage and below action stage, and is not predicted to rise, according to hydrology charts.

The Missouri River at Atchison, Kansas, is in action stage and is projected to rise to minor flood stage by Monday, according to hydrology charts. The Missouri River at St. Joseph, Missouri, is in minor flood stage and is projected to rise to moderate flood stage on Monday. In Leavenworth, Kansas, the Missouri River is below action stage and is projected to rise to action stage on Friday.

Today, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m., the weather service said. It will be sunny with a high near 90 and a south wind of 3 to 8 mph.

Tonight, it will be mostly clear with a low of 72 and a light southeast wind, according to the weather service.

Friday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 86 with a light southeast wind becoming south southeast 5 to 10 mph in the morning.

Friday night, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 71 with a south wind of 9 mph. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected.

Saturday, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 83, the weather service said. A south wind of 9 to 14 mph will gust as high as 18 mph. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Saturday night, there is an 80 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, some of which could produce heavy rainfall, according to the weather service. The low will be around 70. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain are possible.

Sunday, there is a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 79, the weather service said.

Sunday night, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m., with a low of 63, according to the weather service.

Monday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 82, the weather service said.

Monday night, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a low of 65, according to the weather service.

Tuesday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 81, the weather service said.

Tuesday night, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a low of 66, according to the weather service.

Wednesday, it will be partly sunny, with a high near 81, the weather service said.
