Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across eastern Kansas during the late morning and early afternoon today, according to the National Weather Service.

Look for showers and thunderstorms to develop mainly after 11 a.m., the weather service said. Today’s high will be near 79. It will be breezy, with a south wind of 7 to 12 mph increasing to 17 to 22 mph in the afternoon, and winds could gust as high as 31 mph. Between a quarter and a half-inch of rain is possible today.

Storms today should weaken as they push toward the east later today, the weather service said. Additional thunderstorms are possible late tonight.

Expect a 50 percent chance of showers and storms tonight, with a low of 65, according to the weather service. A south southeast wind of 8 to 17 mph will gust as high as 26 mph. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half an inch are possible.

Severe storms are not expected with today’s rain and storms, the weather service said.

From Tuesday through Friday, numerous rounds of thunderstorms are expected, the weather service said. Some may be strong to severe.

Because there are several complicating factors, it is difficult to tell the thunderstorms’ timing, location and severity more than a day in advance, forecasters said. At this time the higher threat for strong to severe storms appears to be Wednesday and Thursday, according to the weather service. All parts of the forecast area are included in the severe risks at this time.

Tuesday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 83. The wind will be from the south at 7 to 17 mph, gusting as high as 26 mph.

Tuesday night, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, the weather service said. The low will be around 70, and a south wind of 9 to 14 mph may gust as high as 20 mph.

Wednesday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 84, the weather service said. A south wind will be 9 to 14 mph, gusting as high as 18 mph. Wednesday night, the chance of rain and storms is 30 percent, and the low will be around 70.

A chance of rain and storms remains in the forecast every day through Sunday, according to the weather service.
