Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas, has been recognized with the Healthgrades 2021 America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award.
The distinction places Providence in the top 5 percent of nearly 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide for its superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems.
“This is the fourth year in a row that Providence has received this distinction,” said Karen Orr, CEO of Providence Medical Center, “and given COVID-19, it has never been more relevant. When you look at the statistics behind this award, this designation translates into actual saved lives in our community.”
Healthgrades further stated that during that same period, if all hospitals performed similarly to those achieving the award, 167,235 lives could potentially have been saved during COVID.
In addition, from 2017 through 2019, patients treated in hospitals receiving the America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award had, on average, a 27.4 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award, as measured across 19 rated conditions and procedures for which mortality is the outcome. Statistics are based on Healthgrades analysis of MedPAR data for years 2017 through 2019 and represent 3-year estimates for Medicare patients only.

Healthgrades America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award recipients are recognized for overall clinical excellence and providing top-quality care across multiple specialty lines and areas. During the 2021 study period (Medicare Fiscal Years 2017-2019), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures — as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
Providence Medical Center was also named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for gastrointestinal care (4 years in a row), general surgery (4 years in a row), orthopedic surgery (4 years in a row).
Providence Medical Center was recognized by Healthgrades for top 5% in the nation for orthopedic services (3 years in a row); and overall GI services (4 years in a row); and patient safety (2017-2020). Providence was also a recipient of the Healthgrades Critical Care Award (4 years in a row) and was named among the top 10 percent in the nation for critical care (4 years in a row).
Providence was also named a Five-Star Recipient for treatment of stroke (for 2 years). Providence also received Five-Star recognition in spinal fusion (15 years in a row), hip fracture treatment (5 years in a row); treatment of pneumonia (5 years in a row); Pacemaker procedures (4 years in a row); treatment of GI bleed (4 years in a row); treatment of pancreatitis (5 Years in a row); gallbladder removal surgery (6 years in a row); treatment of sepsis (6 years in a row); esophageal – stomach surgeries (2 years in a row); and carotid surgery (3 years in a row).
Among other recent, national awards, Providence Medical Center was named to the 2020 Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals list and received an “A” grade in the fall 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing Providence’s achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care.
