Providence 5K race Oct. 8 to benefit YMCA

Providence Medical Center and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City will hold a Rock, Roll and Run Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Providence Medical Center Amphitheater, 633 N. 130th St., Bonner Springs, Kan.

Proceeds benefit the Providence YMCA/Ball Family Center’s Cancer Survivorship program, as well as the YMCA scholarship program.

“We’re excited to partner with the YMCA to present this family-friendly event,” said Dr. Prashanth Katrapati, a Providence Medical Center cardiologist. “This is an opportunity for the community to take part in a running/walking event, learn more about the health and wellness programs Providence and the Y offer to promote health and fitness, and enjoy entertainment from some favorite local bands.”

The family-friendly activities begin Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Providence Medical Center Amphitheatre with a 5K walk-run though Wyandotte Park at 8:30 a.m., followed by a Kids Run around the amphitheater at 10 a.m.

Registration Sept. 9 through Oct. 7 is $30, and day-of-race registration is $35 at the event. Race registration is available online at http://tinyurl.com/RockRollRun. Registration forms also are available at any 8th Street YMCA., Bonner Springs YMCA and the Providence YMCA/Ball Family Center.

There is no cost for the Kids Run, and registration is not required. All first responders, local fire, police and sheriff officers are eligible for a discounted price of $5. They may contact their local YMCA for more information.

A free Community Health Fair sponsored by Providence and the YMCA will feature entertainment from local bands from 8 a.m. to noon.

Health screenings and information will be available for: blood pressure, cholesterol screening for the first 100 attending, breast cancer awareness information, body fat-bmi, health and weight checks, Flu shots (limited availability), Leg Vein Checks (Peripheral Artery Disease), stress measurement and relaxation information for expecting moms, men’s/women’s health information, child seat safety information, smoking cessation and healthy nutrition information, hands only CPR information, Trauma and Dias aster action information, and more.

Other activities include: inflated obstacle course for the kids, Zumba before the kids run, area team mascots including SportingKC Blue and KC T-Bones Sizzle, Bonner Springs fire truck, face painting, Kansas City Kansas Community Policing Show Car, KCKFD Safety House, Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office Ident-A-Kid (finger printing) and other activities.

Participating community organizations in addition to Providence and the YMCA include: Healthy Communities Wyandotte, Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, Bonner Springs Fire Department, Bonner Springs Police Department, Kansas City Kansas Fire Department, Kansas City Kansas Community Policing Department and the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office.
