Problems with merging on I-35 precede rollover accident

A man was injured after a problem with merging on I-35 southbound at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report.

A vehicle was merging into a Pontiac Grand Am’s lane on I-35 south of Antioch in Johnson County, and the other vehicle was too close to the Grand Am, according to the trooper’s report.

The Grand Am swerved to the left to avoid a collision and overcorrected, the report stated. The Grand Am then veered right and struck a Kia Optima, according to the trooper’s report.

Then the Grand Am continued to the right, striking a jersey barrier wall and rolling over. The Grand Am came to rest on its roof, the trooper’s report stated.

The driver of the Grand Am, a 50-year-old man from Olathe, Kansas, was injured and taken to the hospital, according to the report.

The driver of the Optima, a 27-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, woman, was not injured, the report stated.

Also not injured were a 36-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man in the Optima, a 13-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, girl in the Optima, and a 17-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, male in the Optima, according to the report.
