Light rain began the day in Kansas City, Kan., with temperatures at 35 degrees at 8 a.m.
Today’s high will be near 38. A west northwest wind will be from 9 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
For tonight, Christmas Eve, the National Weather Service says that light snow is possible across the area through the day Wednesday, up to a half-inch of snow in places. Most of today, the temperature will be higher than freezing.
The weather service forecast calls for temperatures to be 35 degrees at 6 p.m. today, then 32 degrees at 9 p.m., and 31 degrees at midnight.
A mix of light snow and rain is possible throughout much of Dec. 24, the weather service stated. Little to no snow accumulation is expected because of above-freezing surface temperatures.
On Christmas Day, Dec. 25, the forecast calls for temperatures of 29 degrees at 6 a.m., 32 at 9 a.m. and 44 at noon. Temperatures may rise to 49 at 3 p.m. At 9 p.m. Dec. 25, temperatures may be 41 degrees.
The next round of precipitation could arrive Friday night into Saturday, with one to two inches of accumulating snow possible from east central Kansas through central Missouri, according to the weather service.
Temperatures are expected to turn much colder by the new year, with highs in the teens and overnight lows in the single digits possible.
