Power outages reported

Around 10 p.m. Thursday, some power outages were still seen in southern Wyandotte County, but the outages were much reduced from earlier. (BPU outage map)

Lights flickered and went out for some customers of the Board of Public Utilities on Thursday night.

Outages were estimated in the thousands, but are now almost all restored, according to the BPU’s outage map.

Outages also were reported in Shawnee, Kansas, and the city of Shawnee posted on social media that there was a fire at a substation near 65th and Lackman in Johnson County.

The BPU reported in a social media post that when the Evergy substation exploded in Shawnee, the Nearman power plant and three substations in Kansas City, Kansas, were knocked out, resulting in outages in Rosedale and the central part of the city. Power was restored to substations and the plant is running again, the BPU stated. The BPU is investigating the effect on the utility.
