Police warn residents about telephone scam

The Kansas City, Kan., Police Department is warning residents about a telephone scam.

According to a Police Department spokesman, the scam is currently operating within the city. Residents are contacted by phone and told that there are several warrants for their arrest, in this scam.

They are told that to avoid being arrested, they should send an amount of money, and in some instances, the scammer provided personal information of the resident such as date of birth and Social Security number, police said.

Those who hang up on the individual will likely receive another call from someone falsely claiming to be a law enforcement officer, the spokesman said.

The individuals have disguised the phone number to make it appear as if they are calling from the Police Department, when they are not, the spokesman said.

The Police Department spokesman said that no member of the Police Department will ever call a citizen and demand they send money to avoid arrest for warrants.

Anyone who receives these types of phone calls is asked to contact the Police Department at 913-573-8680, the spokesman said.
