Opinion: Remembering a hero

We were saddened to hear this morning about a crossing guard who died after an accident on Leavenworth Road at 54th Street.

The 88-year-old crossing guard reportedly was telling children to stand back out of the road at the time he was hit by a vehicle, according to local government officials. He later died at a hospital. The accident was on Leavenworth Road in front of Christ the King School. The crossing guard was employed by the Unified Government.

While the victim’s name has not been officially released at this time in order to give enough time to notify relatives and friends, the victim’s name has appeared on several websites.

He was truly a hero who, even in his late 80s, saved lives on his last day on earth. He was a good neighbor and someone who cared about others throughout his life. We were fortunate that he was keeping an eye on Wyandotte County children.

  1. How sad and prayers go out to his family and many friends and the children he looked after but hope it’s a comfort to them knowing he put the kids safety first before his own.

  2. The entire Nill family needs our prayers. Two Nill sons buried their mother on Monday and lost their uncle on Tuesday.

  3. What a special man ! He passed while saving his little friends. He will be dearly missed.
