One person is dead after an overnight officer-involved shooting in Kansas City, Kansas, according to a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.
Officers with the police department were investigating a stolen vehicle in the 2700 block of Wood shortly after midnight when they encountered a suspicious vehicle parked in the area, the spokesman stated.
Upon inspection they saw a single occupant, an adult white male unresponsive with drug paraphernalia and a handgun, according to the spokesman.
Officers with protective shields tried to make contact with the individual, who then opened fire on them, the spokesman stated.
Officers returned fire and retreated, according to the spokesman.
The KCK police special operations unit then determined the individual was deceased, according to the spokesman.
Detectives with the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department and the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s office are investigating.
