Two vehicles were reported to be shooting at each other at 11:36 a.m. Friday in the parking lot of the West State Plaza at 75th and State Avenue, according to a police spokesman.

One stray bullet hit the Big Lots building at 7533 State Ave., while another stray bullet hit a Randy Curnow car dealership building at 7707 State Ave., the police spokesman stated. Two vehicles also were hit by bullets.

There were no injuries, and no one is in custody at this time, according to the police spokesman. The Kansas City, Kansas, police are investigating. Information can be given to the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

Dennis Roscher, an area resident, was standing in line waiting to check out at Big Lots Friday when he heard a loud snap. He and other people thought something just fell over, he said, but it was a bullet that had hit the window.

Then there was a calm announcement from clerks that everyone should stay away from the windows, the store was going on lockdown and they would get it checked out as soon as possible, Roscher said.

“A couple of people were nervous but everybody stayed calm, there was no running, yelling or screaming or anything like that,” he said. “It probably took everybody by surprise.”
