Residents awakened to a new year with an inch or two of snow on a layer of sleet on Jan. 1.
Wyandotte County is under a winter storm warning until 8 p.m. Jan. 1. The National Weather Service says heavy mixed precipitation is expected, with accumulations of 3 to 6 inches of snow and additional ice up to a tenth of an inch, with northeast winds gusting as high as 30 mph.
Snow is expected to continue throughout the day, with sleet or ice also possible. The temperature was 29 degrees at 8 a.m. in Wyandotte County.
The weather service advises some power outages and tree damage are possible with this storm. Hazardous travel conditions are expected. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.
Those who must travel should keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicles in case of emergency, according to the weather service. For highway conditions, call 511.

Accidents were reported throughout the Kansas City area. At 8:10 a.m., an accident was reported on southbound I-635 near Metropolitan Avenue, KC Scout stated. Another accident about 8:28 a.m. was at northbound I-635 near State Avenue, according to KC Scout.
According to the weather service, the precipitation is expected to come to an end, from southwest to northeast, just after sunset Friday evening.
Today, there is a 100 percent chance of precipitation, with snow before 4 p.m., possibly mixed with more freezing rain after 4 p.m., the weather service said. The snow could be heavy at times. Today’s high will be near 31 with a north wind of 11 to 14 mph, gusting as high as 25 mph. Little or no ice accumulation is expected in Wyandotte County. From 3 to 5 inches of snow is possible.
Tonight, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 21 and a north wind of 6 to 11 mph becoming light northwest. Winds may gust as high as 22 mph.
Saturday, it will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 34 and a light and variable wind.
Saturday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 19, according to the weather service. A calm wind will become southwest around 5 mph after midnight.
Sunday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 38 and a south southwest wind of 5 to 7 mph, the weather service said.
