National Weather Service issues weather advisory for Wyandotte County

The National Weather Service has issued a significant weather advisory for Wyandotte County until 2:30 p.m. today.

Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near DeSoto, moving northeast at 45 mph, at about 1:56 p.m., the weather service said.

Wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with this storm.

Bonner Springs, Kansas City, Kansas, Edwardsville and nearby areas are in the path of this storm, according to the weather service. The storm area also includes south central Leavenworth and northern Johnson counties.

Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is occurring with this storm, the weather service said. Lightning may strike 10 miles away from a storm. Residents are advised to seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

The storm may intensify, the weather service said. Monitor radio, television, weather radios and the weather service website for additional information and possible warnings.
