More than 250 kids participated in an attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson today.

YMCA of Greater Kansas City swim instructors provided free swim lessons at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kan., Thursday, June 18, to promote the importance of water safety.

The swim lessons took place at hundreds of locations around the world simultaneously today at 10 a.m. Central time in a coordinated attempt to break the Guinness World Record.

Schlitterbahn and the Y partnered to provide this event locally to promote the importance of teaching children to swim at a young age to prevent drowning, a YMCA spokesman said. Fatal drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years.

Participants in this year’s World’s Largest Swimming Lessons are hoping to break the Guinness World Record record set last year for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson of 36,564 participants representing 22 different countries.
