Moderate river flooding continues, today’s high near 74

Moderate Missouri River flooding will continue today in Wyandotte County, according to the National Weather Service, while today’s high will be near 74.

A slight chance of scattered thunderstorms is possible today after 4 p.m. and in the evening, but severe weather is not expected, the weather service stated.

In Wyandotte County, the Missouri River is in moderate flood stage, while the Kansas River is in minor flood stage.

The weather service said drivers should use caution when approaching roads that are covered with water, and should turn around and take another route.

The Missouri River at Parkville was in moderate flood stage at 30.98 feet at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, where flood stage is 25 feet. This gauge is on I-435 between Wyandotte County and Platte County and its stages apply to Wyandotte County. The river could crest at 33.4 feet on Saturday, according to the weather service.

The Kansas River at 23rd Street was in minor flood stage at 36.05 feet on Thursday morning, where flood stage is 33 feet. The river is expected to continue to rise to nearly 38.6 feet by early Saturday afternoon, then begin falling. The river gauge is at Kansas Avenue and the state line.

The Missouri River at St. Joseph, Missouri, currently is in major flood stage, while the river at Leavenworth and Atchison is at moderate flood stage.

Several other area rivers are in flood stage, including the Grand River near Chillicothe, Missouri, the Marais Des Cygnes River at La Cygne, Kansas, and the Platte River at Sharps Station, Missouri and Agency, Missouri.

Today, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m., with a high near 74, the weather service said. A west wind of 7 to 14 mph will gust as high as 18 mph.

Tonight, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 57 with a northwest wind of 5 to 9 mph becoming light after midnight. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is possible.

Friday, it will be sunny with a high near 83 and a calm wind becoming west southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon, the weather service said.

Friday night, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m., with a low of 2, and a south southwest wind of 3 to 5 mph, according to the weather service.

Saturday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 p.m., the weather service said. It will be mostly sunny with a high near 83 and a west southwest wind of 6 to 9 mph. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is possible.

Saturday night, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m., with a low of 62, according to the weather service. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is possible.

Sunday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 80, the weather service said.

Sunday night, the low will be around 62 with partly cloudy skies, according to the weather service.

Monday, it will be partly sunny with a high near 80, the weather service said.

Monday night, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m., with a low of 66, according to the weather service.

Tuesday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 83, the weather service said.
