Memorial service honors heroes
There are two kinds of heroes, according to James “Bundy” Jenkins.
Jenkins, with the American Legion Post 188, conducted a memorial service today, Memorial Day, at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 94th and State Avenue.
There are heroes who have given their lives in military service, and there also are community heroes, Jenkins said in a speech at the memorial service today. He talked about Clyde LaFollette, who gave many volunteer years with the Salvation Army, as a community hero.
Jenkins talked about the history of Memorial Day. Memorial Day started as a way to honor those who died in serving their country, he said. Gradually, the day became a time to honor all persons who have died.
“Let us not forgot all of those who served in the armed services have served in our places,” Jenkins said. “Take time on this Memorial Day to reflect back on what has been done for freedom’s sake by all of those who have given their lives that we might live in this great land.”
Today’s memorial service included the placing of a memorial wreath at a flagpole at Chapel Hill, the playing of taps on a bugle by Joel Brinkley, the playing of “Amazing Grace” by Joe Henre, retired from the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department, and a 21-gun salute.
