A man in his 70s died from injuries he received in a fire Thursday night at 865 Metropolitan Ave., Kansas City, Kan., according to a Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department spokesman.
Fire crews found the man in a rear bedroom of the home, removed him from the building and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the spokesman said. The victim was taken to a hospital in an emergency EMS vehicle.
The victim’s name will not be released until his family is notified.
The elderly man was the only person in the home when firefighters arrived within 4 minutes after the call, the spokesman said.
The fire at 8:24 p.m. May 14 started in the kitchen area and is under investigation, according to the spokesman.
Crews saw heavy smoke coming from the rear of the building when they arrived, the spokesman said, and found heavy fire in the kitchen area, near the rear of the building.
Crews knocked down the fire and searched the home, finding the man in a rear bedroom.
Of the three dogs and one cat in the home, crews were able to revive two dogs, the spokesman said, while a smaller dog and the cat succumbed to their injuries.
The estimated pre-fire value to structure and contents was $45.000, the spokesman said. The estimated fire damage to structure and contents was $20,000.
The home did not have a working smoke detector, according to the Fire Department.
