Guest column by Lou Braswell
An event that began 31 years ago by Ed an Ione Trapp, the Leavenworth Road Association kids fishing derby, continued this past Saturday at Wyandotte County Lake.
This year’s attendance was somewhat smaller than in the past, with several community events taking place on the same date and at the same time. The weather was super as far as the temperatures and although rain was predicted, we won there, too.
It didn’t take away from the smiles we enjoy every year as the kids proudly march their catch to the weigh station.
We appreciate the Unified Government – Wyandotte County Parks for their participation, such as stocking the Kids Pond along with providing the tables and chairs for our registration area, the electricity for our public address system and the paperwork for registering.
So many have joined in to add the extras. This year our goody bags had items from Quest, Providence Hospital, Chick-Fil-A, Culvers, Wright’s Insurance, Indian Springs Dental and some of our board members.
Then along comes organizations and businesses with prizes to be awarded in a drawing for all the youth that registered to fish. Also, Delta Auto Detailing, Ussery Body Shop and Speedway Muffler donated Walmart gift cards to be awarded with the trophies in each age group. They provided $15 gift cards to 1st place winners, $10 to 2nd place, $5 to 3rd place and $25 to the winner of the largest fish. Our trophies came from Varsity Sports.
The grand prizes in the drawing were a girl’s and a boy’s bicycle provided by Maple Hill Optimist; a wagon, and two lawn chairs from Kyle Wright’s State Farm Insurance; from Sam’s at the Legend two $25 gift cards; a fishing rod from John Cantwell and another fishing rod from Judge Mikesic; Dimples and Diapers donated three $25 gift cards and Buz’s Muffler donated four $10 cards from Sonic.
Leavenworth Road Association has absolutely some of the most fantastic volunteers ever. As I was facing my air conditioning going to air-conditioning heaven Sunday before the derby, and stressing over getting it all pulled together for Saturday’s derby, I have to brag about the help that all showed up packing bags, loading the trucks, and all the incidentals while my new air conditioner is being installed. Wow, what a crew.
Thanks to all involved, those in attendance, the donors and the volunteers.
