The Reola Grant Center recently lent a helping hand to about 200 residents who were without natural gas for about a week at the Central Park Towers in Kansas City, Kan.
Janice Witt, director of the Reola Grant Center, said more than 5,000 pounds of fruits, vegetables and food were donated to the residents during that second week of July. Many of the residents were on fixed incomes, and had to use some of their funds to go out to eat when their natural gas was off.
Witt said that several individuals and groups got together to take turns to bring food to the residents during this ordeal. They first saw reports about it on television news, and then organized an effort through social media that took turns providing food, she said.
Witt said it was an example of people in the community taking care of themselves.
