Three live bands, four taco places and a guest author will be featured at the annual Library in the Park event Sept. 15 at Big Eleven Lake, 11th and State Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas.
The event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is free and open to the public.
The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, which sponsors the event, will be giving away free copies of Derrick Barnes’ book, “CROWN: An Ode to the Fresh Cut,” said Kim Woolery, library spokesperson. The children’s book is about a youth’s trip to the barbershop, where he interacts with the community and affirms his self-worth. The book was illustrated by Gordon C. James.
Barnes will attend the event and sign autographs. He will speak about 10 a.m., the spokesman said.
Three bands will play at Library in the Park this year, including The Sextet, Ayel and The Urban Bucket Brigade, she said. Between sets, AY Musik will be the emcee.
Four restaurants will serve tacos at Big Eleven park: Ninfa’s, Carniceria la Luz, Indios Carbonsitos and Don Antonio’s.
Those who attend the event may sample tacos from all four places for free and then vote on the best taco, she said.
Activities for children are included in the event. There will be a giant bubble station and face painting, the spokesman said, among other activities.
Those attending also will have the opportunity to visit the mobile library and sign up for a library card.
Local nonprofit agencies also are planning to staff tables at the event and distribute information.
Preceding Library in the Park at 8:30 a.m. will be DashKCK, a 5K run-walk sponsored by the Downtown Shareholders.
