The University of Kansas Medical Center has named Sally Maliski dean of the KU School of Nursing.
Maliski, associate dean for academic and student affairs at the UCLA School of Nursing, will start Jan. 1, 2016, at the school in Kansas City, Kan.
“We are extremely pleased to hire an academic leader of Dr. Maliski’s caliber,” said Douglas Girod, executive vice chancellor for the KU Medical Center. “She brings exceptional leadership and the skill to collaborate with others of various disciplines, departments and backgrounds.”
Before she was named associate dean, Maliski served as an associate professor in the UCLA School of Nursing and an assistant researcher for the UCLA Department of Urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine. She joined UCLA in 1999 as a postdoctoral fellow.
Maliski also worked as an educator and researcher for the University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro School of Nursing and Columbia Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Hudson, N.Y.
“Interdisciplinary education is a passion of mine, so I was thrilled to see how committed the School of Nursing is to interprofessional learning,” Maliski said. “I also appreciate the strong collaboration I observed between education and practice at the school.”
Maliski received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from State University of New York at Albany and a master’s degree from Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y. She completed her doctor of philosophy degree at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Maliski succeeds Karen Miller, who served as dean of the KU School of Nursing from 1996 until June 2015. Marjorie J. Bott has been interim dean since June and will continue in that role until Maliski starts at KU.
