The weather was super for today’s Ed and Ione Trapp Annual Kids’ Fishing Derby at Wyandotte County Lake kids’ pond.
There was a nice breeze and the humidity did not kick in until about 10 a.m., but there was still a nice breeze.
The event was sponsored by the Leavenworth Road Association and Wyandotte County Parks.
Community Police Officer Toms sounded the siren from his new police car to begin fishing at 8 a.m.
The first fish was caught and weighed at 8:01 a.m., a catfish at 3 pounds, 1 ounce. From then on, the weigh-in station was busy.
Officer Toms also had 10 rods and reels that were donated to community policing from Cabela’s, so along with the trophy presentation, numbers were drawn for the rods.
Shasa Wells, Wyandotte County Parks employee, presented the trophies along with Officer Toms. Three turtles also were caught during the derby.
