Kansas City Kansas Community College’s The Gallery has announced the opening of its newest exhibit, “Something Old, Something New” by artist George C. Mayfield.
The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will be open from Oct. 4 to Nov. 4 at The Gallery on the KCKCC main campus, 7250 State Ave. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and Fridays and evenings by appointment only. A few of the pieces contain partially nude figures. An artist reception will be 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 7.
“The fundamental focus of the exhibit is to highlight the painting technique and skill of local professional artist George Mayfield,” said Curtis Smith, professor of biological sciences at KCKCC. “It is also to promote the visual arts at KCKCC and in our community.”
Mayfield has been painting for more than 37 years and is the artist-owner of G.C. Mayfield Studio in Kansas City, Kan. His focus continues to be on creating abstracts, 3D art and photo-perfect renditions of flowers and fruits. His work is displayed in galleries both nationally and internationally. He is the first African-American to permanently display a portrait in the Kansas state capitol. In addition, he was commissioned by the Black Historical Society of Kansas City to create an original portrait of the late Martin Luther King Jr., which was sent to the King Center for Non-Violent Social Change in Atlanta, Ga.
“People should visit to be inspired, learn to see through the eyes of others, and possibly see the world in a new way,” Smith said. “The visual arts are another way to develop the neuronal connections of the individual brain and the interconnectedness of humans.”
