Kansas City Kansas Community College forward Cheyenne North is the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week – again.
Both National and Jayhawk Player of the Week in Week 2, North repeated as Week 3 Player of the Week for her performances in KCKCC’s wins over Coffeyville 69-68 and Allen County 86-42 in the 12th Annual Keith Lindsey Classic. It was the third consecutive week a Lady Blue Devil earned Player of the Week, sophomore Erin Anderson taking the award in Week 1.
The leading rebounder in the Jayhawk with 12.2 per game, North is third in scoring (20.4) and shooting 63.6 percent from the field.
North turned in her finest performance of her two-year KCKCC career against Coffeyville, one of only two teams to defeat KCKCC in a 29-3 campaign last season. With KCKCC training by nine points with seven minutes to go, North scored 12 points in a 20-10 Lady Blue Devil rally.
Not only did North put KCKCC ahead 68-67 with 32.6 seconds left, she protected the Blue Devils’ 69-68 lead by stealing the in-bounds pass after Coffeyville had called time out to set up a game-winning play with six seconds to go.
“A huge play, huge,” said KCKCC coach Joe McKinstry. “She laid back and then at the last second broke and got the ball. I’ve been telling her she’s the best player on the floor and her second half tonight showed why she was the National Player of the Week.”
A 5-11 sophomore from Gallatin, Tenn., North finished with a career high 30 points on 11-of-15, hauled down 14 rebounds including six off the offensive boards and blocked six shots.
North followed up a night later with a near triple-double against Allen County – 15 points, 11 rebounds and a career high seven assists. She has recorded double-doubles in four of her five games this season.
