Kansas City Kansas Community College is offering students, faculty and staff the opportunity to celebrate an important moment in U.S. history during its annual observance of Constitution Day.
The 2018 Constitution Day Theme, “A Triumph of the Spirit” is a musical dramatization of the life and journey of the legendary Harriet Tubman. The event is at 11 a.m. Sept. 17 in the KCKCC Performing Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Shirley E. Oglesby Smith Johnson will lead the performance along with cast and crew including – Cynthia Green, Alisia Bell, Austin Bryant, William Gill, Terri Anderson, SanQuan Bell, Denise Ray, Sharon Bryant and Rosa Gill.
The nationally acclaimed play, “A Triumph of the Spirit,” is a two-act play based on the life of Harriet Tubman. According to the play’s website,www.atriumphofthespirit.com, it is “breathtakingly authentic, heartbreakingly sincere, and full of wittiness–this is a play that enlightens, inspires and empowers all at once.”
Dr. Ewa Unoke, chair of the Constitution Day committee, said using humor and powerful heartfelt drama, this rendition of a mature, yet witty and vibrant Harriet Tubman, narrates stories from her childhood, adolescence and young womanhood. He said this semi-musical play aptly illustrates the trials and triumphs that strengthened Harriet’s faith and solidified her life’s purpose.
In addition, to the Constitution Day presentation, those in attendance will have the opportunity to register to vote if they have not done so previously and have the opportunity to buy low-cost new books, CDs and commemorative materials. Although, the event is free, donations are being accepted.
This event is the college’s official observance of Constitution Day, the annual commemoration of the ratification of the Constitution and celebration of its importance in American society. Created in 2004, Constitution Day replaced what was previously known as Citizenship Day. Federal law requires that all educational institutions that receive public funds provide some type of educational programs on the political history of the American Constitution.
