Kansas City Kansas Community is helping new students prepare for their college career through a new orientation program.

SOAR, which stands for Student Orientation Advisement Registration, aims to help students and families discover the resources provided by KCKCC. This includes meeting key faculty members and staff as well as learning about the range of services the college provides.

Tina Church Lewandowski, director of admissions for KCKCC, said after participating in SOAR, students will feel more confident about starting the semester. SOAR began Monday on the main KCKCC campus, 7250 State Ave., with another session scheduled at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 9.

“At KCKCC our purpose, mission and vision focus on a commitment to providing high-quality education to varied communities of individuals. Furthering that goal, we are dedicated to recruit, enroll, retain and graduate KCKCC students as identified in our strategic pillars,” Lewandowski said. “Direct communication throughout the SOAR experience will be of importance to ensure students are knowledgeable of their goals. Excellent customer service will allow person-to-person service to take place as well as KCKCC employees to work together as a team.”

Lewandowski said by ensuring students are prepared to enter an educational climate of excellence, she anticipates more students will achieve their ultimate accomplishment of earning a degree. Among the presentations given at SOAR will be an Information Services workshop, Student Success Advisor information sessions, a campus tour and a Blue Devil Showcase, highlighting the different activities available on campus. Currently, 169 students and 181 parents and supporters are registered to attend.

“A student orientation is one of the many opportunities we have to prepare our students and equip them with the support necessary for success,” she said. “People should attend SOAR to learn more about KCKCC and the services available. Additionally, they will gain a familiarity with the campus, have an opportunity to network with faculty, staff and other students and feel better prepared for college.”
