Kansas City Kansas Community College posted its first Jayhawk Conference sweep in history Thursday.
The Lady Blue Devils started with a 3-0 blanking of Cowley College and the once-beaten KCKCC men followed up with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Tigers in the nightcap in the conference openers for both teams.
Freshman Ana Suarez of Sumner Academy scored twice and Lansing freshman Bailey Zinser once for the KCKCC women. All three goals came in the first half. Goalkeeper Hanna Bishop, a sophomore from Van Horn, recorded the shutout, her first. It was the second conference win in three days for the Lady Blue Devils, who won 3-2 at Johnson County Tuesday.
Cowley took an early 1-0 lead in the men’s nightcap but freshman Hiago Gaspar of Sao Paulo, Brazil, quickly tied it with a goal just 10 minutes into the contest and Harmon sophomore Giovanni Calderon scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 65 minute mark. The goal came on an assist from Guilheme Grave, a freshman from Sao Paulo. Goalkeeper Alec Lakin of Wichita Maize kept the Tigers scoreless for the final 80 minutes.
Both teams are now idle next Wednesday when both play at Coffeyville before returning to play host to Johnson County Monday, Sept. 19, at 5 and 7:30 p.m.
