Kansas City Kansas Community College’s men’s soccer team rebounded from its only loss of the season Wednesday with a 4-0 shutout at Coffeyville while the Lady Blue Devils lost a 1-0 heartbreaker.
The win boosted the Blue Devil men to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Jayhawk Conference heading into a home rematch with Johnson County Monday at 7:30 p.m. The KCKCC women, who lost at Coffeyville on a goal in the final two minutes, will face off against the JCCC women at 5 p.m. Monday.
Sophomores Giovanni Calderon of J.C. Harmon and Tanner Helms of Ashland, Mo., and freshman Hiago Gaspar of Sao Paulo, Brazil, scored the first three Blue Devil goals at Coffeyville. The fourth goal came when a Coffeyville player deflected a shot into his own net.
Alec Lakin, a freshman from Wichita Maize, pitched the shutout in goal for the Blue Devils in a game that was delayed nearly two hours because of heavy rain and lightning.
“The team bounced back from the Johnson County loss and played well,” said KCKCC coach Ruben Rodriguez. “Defensively, we gave up very few opportunities in our own territory.”
