Want to learn how to ride a motorcycle safely? You only have two more chances this year through Kansas City Kansas Community College’s Basic Rider Course.
There are two, three-day sessions to choose from for the Basic Rider Course – Oct. 16, 17 and 18 or Oct. 23, 24 and 25. Classes are from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for both sessions in Room 3622.
The course, which focuses on the special skills necessary to operate a motorcycle, is $200. Discounts are available for KCKCC employees. Students are required to come to the Continuing Education building on the KCKCC main campus, 7250 State Ave., to complete the paperwork required by the state. You can also pick up the workbook and class assignment at this time.
During the classroom portion of the course, students will learn about the different types of motorcycles as well as the vehicle’s controls, how they operate and how to be a responsible rider. Then the course will move outside where instructors will work with students on straight-line riding, turning, shifting and stopping. As the class continues, students will progress to more difficult tasks such as cornering, swerving and emergency braking.
Motorcycles and helmets are provided for this course, and students are required to use the training motorcycles. In addition, students must wear eye protection, full finger gloves, long pants, a long sleeve shirt or jacket and sturdy shoes that cover the ankles. No baggy or flared pants are allowed. Students must have a valid driver’s license.
It is recommended that students practice riding a bicycle prior to the class in order to refresh their balance and coordination skills.
