Kansas City Kansas Community College’s soccer teams posted their second Jayhawk Conference sweep of the season Tuesday, the Blue Devil men winning a thrilling 2-1 overtime decision over Neosho County after the Lady Blue Devils had posted a 2-0 shutout.
The sweep sets up the final home games of the season for both teams Friday, the Lady Blue Devils kicking off at 5 p.m. against Allen County with the men following under the lights at 7:30 p.m.
Freshman Hiago Gaspar’s goal less than three minutes into overtime won it for the Blue Devil men, who boosted their Jayhawk record to 4-3. Sophomore Jesus Galvan of Harmon gave KCKCC a 1-0 lead in the first half only to have Neosho County tie it with 19 minutes left in the second half.
Deadlocked in a scoreless first half, the KCKCC got second half goals from freshmen Marivel Gomez of Jarrel, Texas, and Bailey Zinser of Lansing for the 2-0 women’s win. It was the fourth goal of the season for Gomez, who was assisted by freshman Emily Lutz of Toronto. Jessica Ibarra, a sophomore from Piper, got the shutout in her first start of the season at goalkeeper.
“It was our second win in the last three matches going into a tough game against Allen County Friday,” said coach Shawn Uhlenhake, whose Blue Devils are 3-5 in Jayhawk Conference play.
