A playground at Stony Point North Elementary School, 8200 Elizabeth Ave., Kansas City, Kan., was damaged by fire on Sunday.
A call was received at 5:05 p.m. on Sept. 4, according to a police spokesman.
The fire is believed to have been intentionally set, according to a group trying to restore the playground. Deputy Fire Chief John Zimbelman said an arson determination has not yet been made, although it appears to be arson at this time.
The damage to the playground was estimated at $50,000, he said.
Stony Point North PTA officials are trying to raise funds for a new playground, and donations may be sent to the school or to MainStreet Credit Union, designating Stony Point North playground, according to the group’s Facebook page.
A Stony Point area neighborhood group member said that there had been some minor vandalism in the Stony Point area during the past few weeks, but nothing large prior to Sunday. He said it was important for parents to keep an eye on their children.
